Michelle RO (Carolina, PR 1989) is a writer, artist, cultural manager, and creative writing workshop facilitator. She holds a bachelor's degree in Comparative Literature and Audiovisual Communication from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. She is a graduate of the inter-university master's program in Cultural Management from the University of Valencia and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, where she won the Meridies Cooperation scholarship (2018) to intern at UN Women in Montevideo, Uruguay.
She won first place in the international competition of the Spanish magazine La Oca Loca (2017), the literary competition of the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (2008), and the poetry competition of American University (2010). In 2015, she created the digital platform “Escridiantes” to promote the literary work of participants in her creative writing workshops. Along with writer Magaly Quiñones, the 1st National Meeting of Women Poets of the Atlantic (2016) in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico, was dedicated to her. She served as president of the jury for the Puerto Rico PEN Club poetry prize (2020).
Since 2008, RO has also expressed himself artistically through performance, among which we can highlight “Cuerpo de tierra” (2011), “MujerSuela” (2015), “Vestiduras duras” (2017), “Torturas pasanas” (2019), “Rompecuna” (2023), “En tierras de Aramaná” (which was part of the international video performance exhibition Dislocada 2023) and Michelle RO x Mitxhell for the Corilla Sessions (2024).
She is the author of the poetry collections "Ataque de risa / Ataque de llanto" (2012) and "Creatura" (2018), the short story collection "Medidas a ojo" (2014), and the radio drama "Avistamientos en Kanabin" (2020). Her work has been published in Chile, Mexico, Spain, Uruguay, and the United States. In 2023, she was an artist-in-residence at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MassMoCA). She represented Borikén (Puerto Rico) at the International Poetry Festival in Uruguay (2018) and Puerto Rico (2023), and at the Santo Domingo International Book Fair in the Dominican Republic (2011) and Havana, Cuba (2024). Currently, she works as a Creative Programs and Projects Leader for Poetry Is Busy Studio, LLC.
